Seto Dharti
“Seto Dharti” (2068, first edition) a book (Novel) written by
Amar Neupane, the literal meaning of the word Seto Dharti; Seto (White), Dharti
(Actual meaning is land but writer has used the term to signify the “world”).
The book has presented the issue of early marriage and early widowhood of a
girl living in a village.
The whole book covers the story of a girl child, her early marriage, death of her husband at the age of nine and her sufferings throughout her life being a widow, The book has really covered every possible aspect of society such as; Social, cultural and economic condition in that particular village. Apart from the single story of a girl named “Tara Kumari” (main character of the story) the writer also presents the similar issues happened in that village with the friends of Tara Kumari, her childhood friends and overall her life story. Most importantly, the book presents the life of a Brhamin daughters, early marriage and widowhood at the very early age, perspectives of people on early marriage, treatment of mother in laws towards the daughter in laws. Every chapter of the book has portrayed hard times she went through. The book covers the story before her birth to her age of 87 years.
As a reader I recommend everyone to read a book once if they really want to know the issue on early marriage and early widowhood. The writer beautifully associates the meaning of the title of the book with the story. The widows in Nepal are supposed to wear white dress and not supposed to put on colorful clothes. The story means that the life a widow girl in her white world i.e. Seto Dharti” after being widow.
The writer was awarded by “Madan Puraskar” for the same book. The book was published by Fineprint INAC, Kathmandu Nepal.
